New Clinical Research Demonstrates Superior Efficacy and Safety of Sensoril

Brattleboro, VT (PRWEB) June 30, 2014

In a recent study published in the peer reviewed Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, the multi-patented, GRAS-affirmed, standardized Ashwagandha root and leaf extract, Sensoril®, was shown to improve several areas of cognitive effect in subjects with bipolar disorder. NutraGenesis is the exclusive North American sales and marketing representative for Sensoril® under license from Natreon, Inc. (New Brunswick, NJ).

The study was conducted at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic-University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. An investigational new drug application (IND) was submitted to the US Food and Drug Administration and approval was obtained to use Sensoril® in the study because it met FDA-approved safety guidelines. Sixty subjects with bipolar disorder were enrolled in a 8 week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Compared to placebo, Sensoril® showed significantly greater benefits for 3 cognitive tasks, digit span backward, Flanker neutral response time and the social cognition response rating of the Penn Emotional Acuity Test.

“Modern research and chemistry have identified several bioactive constituents in Ashwagandha that have significant cognitive enhancing benefits, namely the steroidal lactones which are known as glycowithanolides and sitoindosides,” states Dr. Sanni Raju CEO and Chairman of the Board of Natreon, Inc. “Glycowithanolides are brain antioxidants which can promote neuroprotective and memory enhancing activity”, he added.

“Multi-patented, clinically proven Sensoril® was the ideal test agent for this study. Sensoril® is a superior, next-generation Ashwagandha extract that represents a major advancement over root-only extracts because both roots and leaves are used in Sensoril’s proprietary, water-based extraction process”, said NutraGenesis, LLC President and Managing Director, Suzanne McNeary. “Ashwagandha leaves are naturally richer in glycowithanolide bioactive content. The unique use of leaves in addition to roots in Sensoril® (based on intellectual property surrounding the extract) results in Sensoril® having the highest levels if glycowithanolide bioactives (standardized to a minimum of 10%) of any commercial extract available on the market today. In addition, Sensoril® is the only Ashwagandha nutraceutical sold today for which an IND has been granted as a result of Sensoril’s comprehensive safety profile and its commercial use in North America for over 12 years,” she added.

Sensoril® root and leaf extract possesses multiple health benefits, superior efficacy demonstrated in 8 randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled human clinical trials, broad IP status including multiple patents, and a comprehensive safety record. That’s why Sensoril® is best selling, branded Ashwagandha extract of choice in the North American market. Sensoril® is now used in over 200 SKU’s to help support stress, mental cognition, fatigue-reduction, sleep, metabolic wellness, adrenal function, thyroid function, sports performance, and more.

About NutraGenesis: Located in the Connecticut River Valley area of Southern Vermont, NutraGenesis LLC is a diversified nutraceutical product marketing company dedicated to the development and commercialization of proprietary, scientifically researched, health-promoting ingredients. NutraGenesis is the exclusive North American sales and marketing agent for Sensoril®.

Risperdal Litigation Scheduled to Convene at September Meeting in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, Bernstein Liebhard LLP Reports

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 16, 2014

A Risperdal (http://www.lawreward.com/risperdal/) meeting is scheduled to take place next month in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, where hundreds of lawsuits over the antipsychotic medication are continuing to move forward, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports.

According to a Calendar posted on the Court’s website, parties involved in the consolidated Pennsylvania litigation will convene on September 16th at 2:00 p.m. to discuss claims filed against Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Items likely to be included on the meeting’s agenda will be cases that allege new-onset male breast development caused by the medication, a condition referred to as gynecomastia. Court documents in the proceeding reflect nearly 700 cases involving Risperdal now filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, many of which claim the need for a mastectomy, liposuction and other surgical intervention to repair the male breast growth complications was allegedly caused by use of Risperdal. (In Re: Risperdal Litigation, Case Number 100300296)

“Our Firm is looking forward to the upcoming Risperdal meeting in Philadelphia, as we continue to represent clients who allegedly developed male breast growth complications due to the antipsychotic drug,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of defective medical devices and drugs including Risperdal. The Firm is currently offering free and confidential case evaluations to individuals who may have been injured as a result of the medication.

Risperdal Lawsuits

Risperdal is an atypical antipsychotic medication approved to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 17. The drug is also cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat irritability in children ages 5-to-16 years old with autistic disorder. According to research, Risperdal is also frequently prescribed off-label for symptoms associated with ADHD.

As Risperdal lawsuits alleging male gynecomastia continue to be filed in the Philadelphia Common Pleas, a report published this month lends evidence to the association between Risperdal and this particular complication. According to a study published on August 6th in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, 27 out of 174 men exposed to risperidone, the active ingredient in Risperdal, developed male breasts within 60 days. The research was led by scientists from the University of British Columbia and involved health records of more than 82,000 men from 2001 to 2011. The men were aged between 40 and 85 years old.*

According to Risperdal lawsuits filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, Johnson & Johnson and Janssen failed to adequately warn men and their doctors about the risk for gynecomastia and other side effects. The companies have also been accused of marketing the drug for off-label uses.

In November 2013, Johnson & Johnson agreed to a $ 2.5 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice involving claims that Risperdal and several other medications were promoted for uses not approved by the FDA. In the case for Risperdal, this may involve promotion of the drug’s marketing in children before it was cleared for pediatric uses in 2006. The federal government also accused Johnson & Johnson and Janssen of withholding information about Risperdal’s side effects, which may include its association with gynecomastia.

Men and young boys who developed gynecomastia after taking Risperdal may be eligible to file a lawsuit seeking compensation for out-of-pocket medical expenses, lost wages, as well as any pain and suffering that may have resulted from use of the medication. Learn more about filing a Risperdal lawsuit by visiting Bernstein Liebhard LLP’s website. For a free case review, please call 800-511-5092.

Bipolar disorder; types, symptoms and management.

Bipolar disorder is also referred as manic-depressive illness. It is a condition that causes unusual shifts in mood, activity levels, energy and the ability to perform daily tasks. The patient experiences intense emotional states called “mood episodes”.

There are three main type of mood episodes. An overexcited mood episode is referred to as a manic episode while a sad mood episode referred as a depressive episode. When the two episodes happen together, that state is referred to ad a mixed state.

Bipolar disorder develops in adolescence or in early adulthood while in other individuals, later in life. It is a long term illness that requires medical concern throughout the patient’s life.  It can be treated and if not, it can be severe and destructive.

Signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder.

This condition is not easy to diagnose in its early stages of development. Some individuals suffer for many years before a proper diagnosis and treatment. Persons with bipolar disorder may be explosive and irritable during a mood episode. They experience changes in behavior, energy and activity. When the condition is severe, it affects their daily functions such as work or school. A person may experience long lasting periods of shifting moods.

Signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder depend on the episode the individual is experiencing.

For a manic episode, the person experiences long periods of feeling overly happy and excitement accompanied with agitation. They have behavioral changes such as having unrealistic reasoning, restlessness, distraction and impulsiveness.

For a depressive episode, the individual experiences long periods of worrying and lack of interest in activities. The person changes behavior into restlessness, lack of concentration, tiredness and suicidal thoughts.

There are basic types of bipolar disorder.

There is bipolar I disorder. This is mainly manic or mixed episodes that last at least seven days. The manic patient may require hospitalization. The patient has depressive episodes that could last a fortnight. The change in behavior is very much noticeable.

There is bipolar II disorder. This is where the individual experiences depressive episodes shifting back and forth together with hypomanic episodes.

There is bipolar disorder not otherwise specified. (BP-NOS). This is considered whenever the patient has symptoms that cannot be defined as either bipolar I or II, but the symptoms are clearly noticeable as they are not normal behavior.

There is cyclothymia. Also referred to as cyclothymic disorder, it is the mild form of bipolar disease. The patient experiences hypomanic episodes that swing with mild depression.

There are individuals who experience all the episodes in a year. This condition is referred to as rapid-cycling bipolar disorder. This usually occurs in persons with severe bipolar disorder or those who have their first bipolar episode. This condition usually affects women more than men where they experience episodes of major depression, hypomania or mixed symptoms.

Anxiety disorders such as panic disorders also accompany persons with bipolar disorders.  Bipolar disorder patients are at a higher risk of developing thyroid disease, migraines and headaches, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases amongst other diseases.

There are several causes of bipolar disorder.

Genetics. Research shows that it tends to run in families. Children with a parent or sibling who has bipolar disorder are 4 times likely to develop it. This however does not occur more often. The other cause is the brain development.

Management of bipolar disorder.

When dealing with bipolar disorder patients, be understanding and patient with them. The shift in mood episodes necessitates that you to have knowledge on how to deal and accommodate the individual. Offer them support and encouragement as they manage their condition.  Have them distracted regularly to avoid depressive or hypomanic episodes. Let them have adequate sleep and remind them to take their medication. Having a regular routine also helps them avoid both extremes of the episodes. Having them on therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family focused therapy, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy helps them improve their relationships, their communication and affection. It also helps them acquire personal management ability and knowledge.

Charter Fitness of New Lenox, IL Partners with Joliet Jr. College Nursing Students to Help People with Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder and Depression Through Exercise

New Lenox, IL (PRWEB) June 05, 2014

Charter Fitness of New Lenox is partnering with Joliet Junior College Nursing students to provide the tools necessary to enhance physical and mental well-being of patients with anxiety, bipolar disorder and depression. It is known that exercise has physical benefits, and its effect as a weapon against depression and other mental health conditions is substantial. How, you say?

Exercise promotes the brain to release endorphins, compounds that boost immunity and reduce pain in the body. Studies have shown that serotonin, a vital mood neurotransmitter increases in regular physical activity therefore reducing depression signs and symptoms. Research has also pointed toward norepinephrine as having a positive relationship with mood, also directly affected during regular exercise.

An estimated 1 in 10 Americans have experienced depression at some point in their lives; a condition in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with a person’s everyday activities for an extended period of time. Some of the signs and symptoms of depression are: irritability, loss of pleasure in usual activities, difficulty sleeping, and a prolonged lack of energy. Depression can be treated with medications but results are not guaranteed. Studies have shown that a minimum of 20-30 minutes of exercise per day, 3 days a week can help prevent the occurrence of depression, by itself or in conjunction with prescribed medications. As a reminder, never discontinue medications without consulting your physician.

And for those of us that struggle with anxiety and stress, regular exercise has been shown to reduce these symptoms as well. Exercising regularly raises self-esteem, reduces blood pressure, reduces risks related to cardiovascular disease, and diminishes the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The list goes on and on!

Charter Fitness of New Lenox offers many interactive classes along with the personal freedom to experience for yourself, the many different types of exercise. So, considering the long list of positives, exercise is a ‘two-thumbs-up’ for people who have anxiety, bipolar disorder, and depression for enhancing their physical and mental well-being.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) Market: Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2013 - 2019

Albany, New York (PRWEB) June 18, 2014

Transparency Market Research has released a new market report titled “5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) Market for Food and Beverage, Dietary Supplements, Medical and Other Applications – Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2013 – 2019.” According to the report, the 5-HTP market was valued at USD 31.7 million in 2012 and is anticipated to reach USD 51.4 million by 2019, increasing at a CAGR of 7.1% from 2013 to 2019. In terms of volume demand for 5-HTP stood at 136.4 tons in 2012.

Browse the full 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) Market Report: http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/5-htp-market.html.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a precursor to neurotransmitter serotonin and an intermediate of tryptophan metabolism. 5-HTP is an essential amino acid produced by the brain that regulates serotonin level in the body. Global demand for 5-HTP is primarily driven by the rapidly changing lifestyle of various population groups across the world. Increased stress level due to improper diet and hormone fluctuations have led to higher consumption of anti-depressant medications. Furthermore, being a plant extract, 5-HTP offers several advantages over tryptophan, a synthetically derived anti-depressant available in the market. These factors are expected to remain the major driving force for the 5-HTP market. Complication involved in the supply and price of raw material, i.e. seeds of Griffonia Simplicifolia, is likely to be the key challenge for market participants.

5-HTP used for dietary supplement applications was the predominant application segment, accounting for over 40% of the total demand in 2012. Demand for 5-HTP used for dietary supplements is estimated to rise significantly in the next few years due to increasing consumption of 5-HTP to maintain serotonin level in the brain. 5-HTP is widely consumed in the form of dietary supplements across the globe. It has a positive effect on pain sensation, anxiety, sleep and reduced appetite.

For further inquiries, ask here: http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/sample/sample.php?flag=S&rep_id=409.

North America accounted for about 48.0% of the total 5-HTP market in 2012, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific. Asia Pacific is expected to be the one of the fastest growing regional markets in terms of consumption and production of 5-HTP. The region is characterized by the presence of numerous small and medium sized 5-HTP producers. Changing lifestyle is also anticipated to be a major factor for higher demand for 5-HTP. This has encouraged various manufacturers to focus on capacity expansion in Asia Pacific. Europe is the other major region with higher consumption of 5-HTP. In terms of volume, demand for 5-HTP in Europe is expected to increase at a CAGR of about 6.8% from 2013 to 2019.

Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

One of the serious illnesses is bipolar disorder and without treatments, this dosease become worse and affect the lives of the individual as well as the loved ones around them. Although it is an incurable disease, we can maintain a normal life and prevent a tragedy from occurring due to the symptoms of this disorder by recognizing the signs and symptoms and getting the proper medical treatment.

Individuals who have bipolar disorder experience mood swings which can be “ups” – or “manic episodes” – and “downs” or “depression”. There are also those who experience “hypomania” which is “mania” with less severe symptoms, and “mixed episodes” which consists of “mania” or “hypomania” and “depression”.

The Symptoms of “Mania” and “Hypomania” or “Manic Episodes”

When an individual experiences the “mania” symptoms of bipolar disorder they can become extremely euphoric, hyperactive, have a lot of energy, and often feel as if they are invincible. This heightened state of euphoria can lead them to do many things on an extreme level which can be detrimental such as shopping sprees, gambling, and engaging in sexual promiscuity.

They also have a tendency to do impulsive things and have poor judgment such as quitting their job, or making goals and plans which are unattainable. The symptoms of “Hypomania” are very similar to the “mania” but tend to be much less severe as the individual still remains productive in their day to day life.

The Mixed Episodes Depression Side of Bipolar Disorder

When an individual experiences the depressive state in bipolar disorder they may eat less or overeat causing them to have a significant change in weight, they often feel great sadness with a loss of self worth, they are unable to enjoy anything in their life, and also have a loss of energy and feel fatigued.

The state of depression in bipolar disorder can also lead to thoughts of suicide. When an individual has mixed episodes they can experience the symptoms of both mania and depression simultaneously or one right after the other with racing thoughts, irritability, and anxiety.

There is also a higher risk of suicide associated with these mixed episodes. It essential if you or a loved one is experiencing any of these types of mood disorders, you obtain a consultation with a medical professional for a proper diagnosis.

M3 Information Offers PCMH Platform to Help Psychologists Work with Primary Care Providers to Triage Mood and Anxiety Problems

Rockville, MD (PRWEB) August 07, 2014

A new tool that allows healthcare providers to quickly screen for multiple mood and anxiety disorders—including depression, anxiety, PTSD and bipolar—is paving the way for increased behavioral health integration between psychologists and primary care providers.

M3 Clinician is a multi-dimensional, validated screening tool that helps clinicians at patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs) more easily identify behavioral health problems in patients and refer those who need specialist care. This tool also offers psychologists the assessment and monitoring capabilities to track patients’ progress and outcomes over time.

“Mood and anxiety disorders are the two most common dimensions of psychiatric illness that healthcare providers encounter with their patients,” said Dane Hallberg, CEO of M3 Information, which developed the tool. “M3 Clinician is the first “prevalidated” electronic tool to look at all four dimensions — depression, anxiety, PTSD and bipolar — that has received autocredit in Patient Centered Medical Home Recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance. It’s a single, three minute evaluation with real-time results, so primary care practitioners can quickly identify potential behavioral health problems to aid diagnosis and treatment, while helping to triage more severe problems for referral to behavioral health specialists.”

The results of a new analysis of M3 Clinician will be presented by Dr. Berverlyn Settles-Reaves, project director in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Howard University, at the American Psychological Association Annual Meeting on Friday, August 8 at 4 p.m. in Washington, DC. The study demonstrates a high correlation between scores on the M3 Clinician and those from the Short Form Health Survey (SF-12), a valid assessment of functional health and well-being. In this study, correlations were calculated between SF-12 and the individual subscores from the four dimensions of the M3. “This study is an excellent quality indicator of the M3 Clinician,” said Dr. Settles-Reaves. “A key characteristic of a good mental health monitoring tool is the ability to reflect levels of functionality. This study shows that M3 Clinician does that.”

M3 Clinician is the only “prevalidated” electronic tool for multidimensional mental health that has been approved by the National Committee for Quality Assurance for use in Patient Centered Medical Homes. NCQA is a not-for-profit organization that is committed to improving health care quality by developing standards and performance measures for a broad range of health care entities. The tool was originally validated in a study published in the March 2010 issue of the Annals of Family Medicine that was based on the responses of 647 patients at the University of North Carolina Family Practice Medicine Clinic. Since the publication of the study in March 2010, the M3 Checklist has been taken by hundreds of thousands of people in over 120 countries and in all 50 states.

“The M3 Clinician is introduced to the patient at the time of intake and we repeat it quarterly at the time of treatment planning,” said Alissa Mallow, DSW, LCSW, administrator of quality improvement systems for the ACACIA Network. “For staff, the M3 Clinician provides actionable clinical data. For some patients, the M3 begins the conversation regarding the symptoms they may have been struggling with over their lifetime; while for others, it deepens the conversation, helping them to move forward in self-care and wellness. The M3 Clinician is the tool we have adopted to promote integrated care across all product lines.”

This can translate into lower out-of-pocket costs and increased health care participation. People seek mental health treatment in primary care settings much more frequently than in specialty mental health clinics. According to the National Institute of Mental Health’s most recent estimate, the annual economic impact of untreated mood disorders is more than $ 70 billion, while many studies have shown it to be cost effective to integrate behavioral health care with primary care.

A new study suggests 55% of Americans will suffer from a mental disorder during their lifetimes, while less than one-fifth receive adequate care. One in five people with depression may actually have bipolar disorder, and many have an anxiety problems that complicate treatment. Some of these misdiagnoses and the ensuing mistreatment may result in worsening symptoms and even suicide, a particular problem among active and retired military. People with chronic medical problems such as heart disease or diabetes are at greater risk and may appear resistant to treatment if they have unrecognized mood or anxiety problems. That’s why knowing the answer to “What’s my M3?” is so vital.

For a limited time, psychologists can register for a free 90-day subscription to M3 Clinician.
